Supporting Young People & Adults with Autism in the Criminal Justice System

At Mentoring Academy, we are committed to breaking cycles of reoffending and providing tailored support to those most at risk. Our work extends beyond young adults—we also support children as young as 10 through to adulthood, including individuals with autism who are known to the youth justice system, police, and other agencies.

We recognise that young people with autism often face unique challenges, including communication barriers, sensory sensitivities, and difficulties with emotional regulation, which can sometimes contribute to involvement in the justice system. Our specialist interventions focus on:

 • Early intervention & mentoring – Engaging with children and young people from the age of 10 to provide positive role models and guidance before behaviours escalate.
 • Bespoke behaviour management programmes – Supporting those with autism in understanding their emotions, decision-making, and the consequences of their actions.
 • Collaboration with police, probation, and youth offending teams – Ensuring a joined-up approach to rehabilitation and reducing reoffending.
 • Skill-building and alternative pathways – Providing vocational training, education, and structured physical activity programmes to channel energy into positive outlets.
 • Family & community support – Helping parents and guardians navigate challenges and access the right resources for their child’s needs.

Our approach is rooted in understanding, patience, and tailored strategies that cater to neurodiverse individuals. By addressing behavioural challenges early and providing ongoing support, we empower young people and adults with autism to make better choices, stay out of the criminal justice system, and lead fulfilling lives.
